There is a growing number of members who are using iFlightPlanner as a flight planning companion to their flight simulation software (i.e., FSX or X-Plane). The iFlightPlanner Crew very much welcomes this expanded use of iFlightPlanner, and we're beginning to explore ideas on how best to transfer the the real-world flight plans created with iFlightPlanner into flight simulator software. Keeping in mind that iFlightPlanner Premium members already have the ability to export their flight plans to the Garmin .FPL and .GPX file formats;

1) If you're a flight simmer, would you be interested in seeing this type of technology added to iFlightPlanner for the flight sim community?
2) How would you describe your ideal flight plan export/import process between iFlightPlanner and your flight sim?

We look forward to hearing your feedback!

Moving map display - so you can see where you are on the iflightplanner map when flying in x-plane.

I agree with dfullmer. Exporting directly to FMS would be nice but that would't be killer function for me. I would be much more happy to be able track my flight on the map in iPad app. X-Plane is capable of sending coordinates to configured IP address.

Thanks for your post, Kamil! We will touch base with the X-Plane team to get complete information on how their software broadcasts aircraft location information.

iFlightPlanner for iPad v2.0 is currently in final testing, but we have added X-Plane integration to our review list for v2.1!

I thought I would hop in and let those of you who are following this thread know that a UK-based company called Dovetail Games has just acquired the rights to Microsoft Flight Simulator X and plans to begin re-distributing the product later this year via the Steam online gaming platform. The lead story on the iFlightPlanner Blog has more info and highlights the new functionality in iFlightPlanner for iPad that enables the app to behave as if it were flying in the cockpit with you!

Have a great weekend!

Best,
Andy

Additional market opportunity for you. I see you have added the iflightplannerpro option to connect x-plane to iflightplanner. GREAT! That's good for those who are flying in real aircraft and don't mind the annual fee for updated charts.

What about offering it for a one time fee for the flight sim community who don't have an airplane, and hence don't need the annual fee for updated charts? You can lock-out in-flight GPS derived location information from the ipad and other in-flight GPS sources and only offer it for simulators like x-plane (FSX-10 etc).

You have a great product, but only sell it to people who own airplanes. If you sell it also to the "Simmer" community, there are FAR more sim pilots out there world-wide than the people who fly real aircraft. More revenue to you, and a better simulation experience for "Simmers"

Thank you very much for the insight David, we will definitely put this up for discussion with the iFlightPlanner Crew...

All of the current charts and instrument approach procedures are available on iFlightPlanner.com and in iFlightPlanner for iPad with an iFlightPlanner Free membership. Just to be sure I'm bringing the correct info to the table, are you saying that current aeronautical charts are not of value to pilots who fly simulators exclusively?

Looking forward to continuing the conversation!

Best,
Andy

Thank you for your reply Andy.

Yes, pilots who fly simulators exclusively don't need updated current aeronautical charts. I've flown FSX, Microsoft Flight, and X-plane, and as far as I know, these products never update their airport database or aeronautical charts.

None of the quality flight planning and moving map products (such as yours) for the ipad currently are offered for pilots who exclusively fly simulators. They all offer a 30 day free trial and/or a monthly or annual fee for continued use to the simulation community, but these costs are prohibitive to an exclusive simulator pilot.

I'm suggesting you offer for a one time fee, the features you have on your current free membership, with the inclusion of the moving map display, but without chart updates. You can up-sell to the Pro version for an additional fee, and again without chart updates. Both these products would only work on simulators.

As far as marketing, Xplane has a store at http://www.x-plane.org/ where you can post your software link to iTunes for a download.

Thanks for your consideration.

Hi Ebiri,

Given the growing popularity of this feature available to our iFlightPlanner Premium and Premium Plus members, we just created a supplement to the original post on the iFlightPlanner Blog that focussed more on Microsoft FSX. Here is the link to the new details for X-Plane:

Should you have any other questions please don't hesitate to let us know!
