Export flight plan as Google Earth file Messages in this topic - RSS

When planning a flight to a destination that's new to me, I'd like to be able to "pre-fly" my planned flight in Google Earth, so I can see a video quality image of the flight. iFlightPlanner Premium allows users to save plans as GPX files, and Google Earth will open GPX files. But currently, iFlightPlan's GPX files do not contain altitude data, so when they are played in Google Earth's "Tour" feature, the images are not what a pilot would see. If iFlightPlanner's GPX files contained altitude data -- especially the altitudes chosen by pilots during the flight planning process -- Google Earth's "Tour" feature would do a very good job of previewing what pilots will see from the cockpit when they actually fly their planned flights.

Hi Lon,

Just wanted to let you know the most recent version of iFlightPlanner.com was released this morning. Included in this version is an update to the .GPX formatting to include the altitude at each point along the route, as determined by the detailed navigation log.

Google Earth should recognize the altitude as long as you uncheck the "Adjust altitudes to ground height" when opening the GPX file.

Thanks for the great suggestion!

John,

This is terrific! I just used this new feature to view, in Google Earth, a flight that I previously planned in iFlightPlanner and then actually flew.

It's absolutely uncanny how realistic the Google Earth depiction was, using the fhe GPX file that iFlightPlanner created for me just now.

Thank you so much for adding this feature, and for adding it so soon after my suggestion.

No problem, Lon! As you know, we always welcome member input and feature requests and do our best to build new features as quickly as possible.

I was testing the new GPX functionality in Google Earth yesterday. It is really cool to see the 3D depiction of the route!

Someone recently asked about GPX export capability on AOPA's forum ... might lead to some opportunities (aka users) if you mention the new altitude feature in this thread: http://forums.aopa.org/showthread.php?t=88985

Hi Rick, thanks for the heads-up! We just poked our head in there and saw that Lon (the originator of this post) followed-up on AOPA as well, and that's the most we could ever ask for! We sincerely appreciate everyone's continued interest and support of what we're doing!

Keep the new ideas and suggestions coming and don't ever hesitate to let us know if there's anything we can do!
